The decay step is likely cytoplasmic, but this has not been fully verified, nor has a reader been fully characterized. For simplicity, the diagram depicts posttranscriptional regulation of the splicing step, but the splicing “choice” and presumably METTL16 methylation of the hairpins occur cotranscriptionally (Pendleton et al. 2018).
