Publication Fees and Waivers

Accepted articles incur a publication service charge of $1250 for RNA Society members and $1500 for non-Society members. No fees are levied for the use of color figures, nor the hosting of Supplemental Material on the journal's server.

Articles will incur a $50-per-page surcharge on all pages beyond 12. Surcharges will also be required if substantial text changes are made or color figures replaced after a paper has been accepted for publication.

RNA waives or discounts publication fees for eligible authors as part of our waiver and discount policy. Publication fees are fully waived for corresponding authors from countries countries listed in "Group A" by Research4Life, and discounts are available for corresponding authors from countries listed in "Group B".

A limited number of discretionary waivers are available for authors who are unable to pay publication fees, but who do not qualify for geographically based waivers.

No waivers are granted for optional Open Access fees.

Publication fee waiver requests must be submitted to journals{at}cshl.edu at the same time that the manuscript is submitted to the journal. Any supporting documentation providing evidence of inability to pay the publication fee, such as a statement from the author's funder, institution, or supervisor/head of department would be helpful in supporting RNA's decision-making process.

Prearranged fee waivers may be available for commissioned articles, and these should be discussed with journal editors prior to submission.

Waiver status will have no effect on Editorial consideration, acceptance, or publication of submitted papers.

Open Access Option

Authors are offered an optional Open Access Article Processing Charge (APC) of $2500 (RNA Society Members) or $3700 (non-Society Members) to make a paper freely available online immediately upon publication. Authors can select Open Access with either a Creative Commons CC-BY-NC License (Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International) or a a CC-BY License (Attribution 4.0 International). Authors who choose Open Access may select one of the two CC licenses by completing the Open Access License to Publish form upon acceptance. Choosing Open Access will have no effect on acceptance and publication of submitted papers.

Note: The OA APC is in addition to the journal's $1250/$1500 publication service charge, which applies to all accepted papers.

If your institution has a Transformative License Agreement with CSHL Press at the time of manuscript acceptance, your publication fees may have been prepaid.

Compliance with Funder Mandates for Open Access

For Articles listing support from US federal funders (e.g., National Institutes of Health), authors may deposit the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) version of their paper in their funder 's preferred repository (e.g., the National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central for NIH-funded authors), provided both that (i) the Article is the result of direct funding from that organization, (ii) the corresponding funder is listed in the Article's acknowledgements, and (iii) such deposit is required by the funder. The AAM should be made publicly available in the funder's repository no earlier than the Official Date of Publication of the Article and in accordance with the individual funder's policy. The Authors are solely responsible for complying with the public access requirements of their funders. RNA will deposit the version of record of all Open Access articles in PubMed Central upon publication of the article in an issue.
