Model of the adaptive response to chronic stress. Sustained UPR occurs in two sequential phases. Acute phase: transient activation via eIF2α phosphorylation, allowing the permissive translation of uORF-containing mRNAs, including CPEB4 mRNA. Chronic phase: mediated by translational activation and increased stability of CPE-containing transcripts, including CPEB4.
