Mutations of ribosomal protein S5 suppress a defect in late-30S ribosomal subunit biogenesis caused by lack of the RbfA biogenesis factor

The activity of K529 mutants of firefly luciferase (Fluc) expressed in strains carrying various rpsE suppressor mutations in (A) the wild-type background or (B) in the presence of the rbfA::Km^R mutation. The Fluc activities produced for each of the mutants of Fluc K529 are expressed as a ratio to that of the wild-type enzyme. Activities are shown for the four known error-prone mutants replacing the wild-type Lys codon with AAU (Asn), UAG (stop), AGG (Arg), or AGA (Arg). Error bars are standard errors of the mean.
