A model for Mag exon 12 alternative splicing. A hairpin loop at the 5′ splice site inhibits association of hnRNP A1 and the spliceosome. Relaxation of the structure facilitates association between both hnRNPA1 and the spliceosome, allowing competition between the two to determine whether the exon is included or excluded.
