Schematic representation of a model depicting the eIF4AI-eIF4AII regulatory loop. Two models are proposed. In one model (I), eIF4AI interacts with X, a mediator (direct or indirect) of eIF4AII transcriptional control. In a second model (II), the translation of an eIF4AII transcriptional repressor is responsive to changes in eIF4AI activity such that a decrease in eIF4AI activity causes a reduction in repressor levels and augments eIF4AII transcription. Neither model is mutually exclusive. For clarity, the eIF4AI-mTOR-S6K1 feedback loop described in the text and previously documented is not shown.
