GFP-derived piRNAs mediate silencing in trans. A pIZ vector-based GFP reporter was transfected into WT BmN4, and #3, #5, and #8, which expressed GFP piRNAs, and #4, which expressed neither GFP proteins nor GFP piRNAs.
