Model of SLBP-dependent histone mRNA export. (A) Histone mRNA metabolism in normal S-phase cells. SLBP remains associated with the histone mRNA in the nucleus, and the mRNA is efficiently exported associated with multiple proteins that recruit TAP. (B) Histone mRNA metabolism in cells depleted of SLBP. Histone mRNA is processed normally by the residual SLBP, but that SLBP dissociates from the processed mRNA before it can be exported, and the processed message remains in the nucleus, where it is stable.
